Video streaming has become increasingly important to the modern internet. In addition to obvious use cases - such as video-on-demand and live streaming services - websites embed video for marketing, instructional and even decorative purposes. However, network infrastructure was not designed for such heavy use of large, resource intensive files such as video, and bottlenecks frequently cause videos to stutter and lag.
Qwilt was founded to solve this problem, providing software which optimizes network traffic to allow video to stream more rapidly and at higher quality despite infrastructure constraints. Compared to its competitors its technology offers streaming capacities of up to 20 times higher, approaching 10,000 Terabits per second across its network. This has attracted some major streaming video providers as customers, including the likes of Disney+, Vodafone and Verizon.
The company has attracted a very significant level of funding, most recently closing a 2021 Series E funding round at a valuation of $800 million. This round was led by Cisco and is part of a move to deepen the partnership between the two companies. Qwilt and Cisco together form one of the world's largest and fastest content delivery networks. Going forward, the importance of this move cannot be understated, as it places Qwilt in an excellent position to benefit from (and supply solutions for) the increasing demand for streaming content, including the mainstreaming of AR and VR content for business and consumer use.
