Refinery29 is an online digital media platform focused on young women. Initially founded as a city guide, the site has since expanded to cover editorial and video programming, live events, and social, shareable content. Although initially focused on the US market, the business has now expanded into the UK and Germany.
Refinery29's success may be down to the strength of its unique brand – the site has built up a global audience footprint of 550m across all digital platforms. Instead of focusing on mainstream narratives, Refinery29 has placed a strong emphasis on diversity. They regularly create campaigns that focus on women in under-represented demographics.
After raising $45m in venture capital, the site was purchased by Vice Media in 2019 for a reported $400m, valuing the combined business at $4 billion. Vice has provided the backing required to power the company's continuous growth since then.
