To enable women to be seen, share their struggles and triumphs, benefit from the experience of others, and share their own.
A date, a night out or just walking home from work can swiftly turn into a harrowing ordeal for women, non-binary and genderqueer people. Turning to the police isn't always an option, especially given recent developments and scandals around sexism and gendered violence in a number of major police forces. SafeUP was founded to provide a way for women and people of marginalised genders to access help and safety without involving the authorities.
Used by over 100,000 people worldwide, the SafeUP app links users to Guardians, trained and vetted volunteers who are available to provide assistance when a user is feeling unsafe in the community. It also launched its Safe Places initiative in 2022. This allows qualified establishments to appear on the SafeUP app as a location which will provide support in any threatening situation.
SafeUP is pursuing a partnership strategy to improve its users' safety, working with firms such as Lime, Waze and Moovit to provide mobility options to Guardians and app users and to advertise SafeUP's safe spaces with those services. Going forward it will build more of these partnerships and continue to develop its platform. While community safety apps can only provide part of the solution to violence against women, non-binary and genderqueer people, SafeUP's platform is nonetheless a valued contribution.
