Scalpel's mission it to help hospitals reduce preventable errors and cut down costs in litigation.
Medical errors are the third leading cause of death, the majority of them occur during surgery. Scalpel wants to change that by building a non-invasive sensing platform for hospitals to improve patient safety, prevent serious incidents and reduce costs.
Their proprietary system detects and prevents errors in real-time during an operation using a combination of deep learning, sensor fusion techniques, electronic health records and clinical actions to enhance surgical productivity. Their platform acts as a second pair of eyes and ears in surgery, in an area where the slightest human error can be catastrophic.
Their first product, a computer vision driven AI platform, ensures clinicians have the right equipment, at the right time and right place, creating certainty in patient safety across the surgical care pathway. There is huge scope for their offering to expand if it proves to be effective in operating rooms.
