Since being founded, Seneca has been driven by the goal of making free online learning more effective and enjoyable. Rather than asking for subscriptions from students, it supports schools which use both its free and premium offerings for their pupils.
To modernise the education industry, Seneca provides videos, summaries, notes, and lots of practice questions on its online interactive revision guides. Unlike traditional tutoring services, it is fully adaptive to students' learning experience, and tailored to suit their unique educational needs. This approach has been developed in collaboration with Oxford neuroscientists, and offers a statistically significant improvement in learners' test scores.
The rise of homeschooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic has massively increased the size and the demand of the market, with Seneca having up to 50,000 students signing up daily during lockdown. Seneca is currently used by over 6 million people across the UK, as well as millions across the world - including Brazil, Mexico, the UAE, and the USA.

Matthew Read
(CTO)Matthew joined Seneca as their first software engineer in 2017, and have since been helping the team and the product grow to serve over 10 million users. He transitioned into the CTO role in 2024.

(CEO)Jack started as an intern working on Seneca's content in 2017 before spending 5 years as COO working across Content, Ops, Growth & Product. He took on the CEO role starting in December 2023.

I applied for Seneca because I have an interest in technology but no experience so the role I applied for was Customer Support. From week 1 my manager and teammates have been supportive and keen for me to learn new systems and processes, not always specifically related to my job role but just because I had an interest. It's rare to find a company where you ask to learn something new and they make a conscious effort to find you something new to learn! There is no holding back or being told to stay in your lane.

Seneca is not a company that micro manages or hand holds (unless you want it) There's very much an atmosphere of whatever you are comfortable is how it will be. If you want several catch up sessions a day then fine, if you prefer to let your manager know only when you need help that's fine too. There's a huge element of trust and faith in every member of the team, Seneca adapts to how you work best.

It doesn't feel like we've got managers but supportive and more experienced colleagues! The training and day to day Seneca life is not a strict process of you must follow these steps and when the manager feels you are ready you can move on. It's based more around your capabilities, your confidence levels and whether you feel you are ready to do it alone. The culture is very much to give it a go, ask for help when needed and don't feel bad about mistakes. They happen. It's not an environment where you spend the night awake stressing about a mistake you made that day because the team will work together to resolve it and prevent it from happening again. There's not a blame culture. All management, even at the highest level are friendly and approachable, happy to answer even the most inane and repetitive questions!

The main reason I joined Seneca is the ethos at the core of the product - levelling access to good education (mainly by providing a lot of content for free). This has been at the core of every decision that I have seen made from a strategic, financial, operations, and product point of view.
