Open source software is increasing in popularity due to its potential for customization in an ever-changing tech landscape. However, open source hardware for accessing and customizing mainstream processing chips often requires expensive licenses, royalty fees or is even impossible.
SiFive designs domain-specific solutions for semiconductors based around the silicon design framework RISC-V. These chips feature a smaller amounts of instruction sets than generalized processors. Instead, the company focuses on providing a wide range of specialized and open source RISC-V chips.
SiFive states that their customizable chips should result in a less restrictive industry whilst removing the need for buying expensive and generalized chips. The company has received support from many tech-giants such as Intel, Google and Microsoft.
