Our take
SpiderOak is a collaboration tool and file-hosting service that helps companies and individuals share data via the cloud. A legacy player in the industry, SpiderOak dates back to 2007 when it developed a JavaScript-based backup program using “zero knowledge” guidelines, being one of the first companies in the industry to do so.
Since then it has evolved into an enterprise software company that is used for cybersecurity in space programs and defense & intelligence. With space technology especially difficult to keep secure due to the use of third parties at all stages of launch and orbit, SpiderOak Space Cybersecurity Solutions provides control plane, temporal, and processing security software, whilst the defense and security arm of the company claims to be the “Signal” messaging software that meets security demands.
As a trusted partner in sensitive, costly enterprises like national defense and space travel, SpiderOak has proved itself through experience. The company’s shift from open-source tech to enterprise software in 2017 indicated a focus on longevity and expansion. Its substantial rounds of funding and ongoing partnerships with the likes of Satellite company Raytheon Technologies and the Defense Innovation Unit exemplify its plans for long-term innovation, at a time when satellite communication is becoming ever more complex.
