Our take

Spoon Guru is an award-winning, digital health innovation partner to leading grocery retailers around the world. Co-founded in 2015, it offers an end-to-end solution that transforms the retail experience by enriching the retail data and allowing retailers to build better and new ways to improve the health of shoppers. Furthermore, they work with an advisory panel of world-leading health and nutrition experts to ensure the latest scientific knowledge is integrated into the technology’s DNA.

The company started in the UK, partnering with retailers like Tesco, to provide lifestyle and dietary search filters for online shopping. Since 2018 it has expanded to other countries like Australia, the Netherlands and the US, with 94% of app users stated that Spoon Guru makes finding the right food easier, and 89% saying it has improved their quality of life.

Spoon Guru's future looks promising. Its latest study found that 25% of British & American consumers are opting for sustainable diets, with nearly a third urging retailers for more help choosing plant-based foods. In addition, the growing trend towards online grocery shopping brings more relevance to health-tech solutions like this, especially when only 1 in 4 consumers believe that supermarkets are doing enough to support their health.

This was reflected in the last funding round, as the food-tech secured a multi-million investment through the venture capital arm of Australian retailer, Woolworths Group. The investment will be used to expand Spoon Guru’s footprint with retailers across APAC, North America and Europe, at a time when governments are putting a greater focus on the importance of food and health to boost national health.
