Stem exists to help artists navigate the business behind their music.
30% employee growth in 12 months
Stem’s founders have rightly labelled the way Music juggernauts treat the finances of their artists as ‘asinine’. Artists typically get paper-based statements of their finances twice a year based on murky record deals and not-so-transparent streaming numbers.
Stem is building a different way. Its central product is a dashboard that tells labels how much they’ve invested and shows their artists and collaborators when they can expect to get paid.
The unprecedented visibility into creatives’ finances in the industry has won the startup many fans including Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, and Nashville’s Big Loud. Next, the platform is targeting UK expansion, already seeing early success with artists and managers including Boy George, Kate Nash and Waves Rush In.
The biggest challenge for Stem will be keeping on top of the rapidly changing environment in music, culture and payments. With the advent of NFTs and a more competitive streaming space, Stem will have to continually iterate its product to deliver for its clients.
