Our take

Ride-hailing services, the micro-mobility industry, and the rise in electric and self-driving vehicles are having a dramatic impact on the complex web of traffic in the U.S. General increases in road travel combined with these new transportation innovations are increasing traffic congestion, and current options to analyze the data behind this traffic for improved navigation efficiency are limited.

StreetLight uses location data from third-party smartphone apps in order to provide a real-time overview of traffic congestion levels. Through using this location data, the company can provide insights into any transportation system including micro-mobility vehicles and foot traffic, ultimately providing information to its customers to help manage and optimize transportation systems.

Several other companies are aiming to tackle shipping fleet efficiency, self-driving car communication, and other granular data points regarding traffic. However, Streetlight has taken a more unified approach through the use of smartphones, to provide a bigger picture of traffic data across every transportation method. The company has been acquired by Jacobs, an international technical professional services firm, providing the chance to increase its business reach on a global scale.
