Our take
Software development platforms have become increasingly accessible and user-friendly over the last decade, with many developers utilizing platforms such as Google's Firebase over low-level platforms to build mobile and web applications. However, such resources are often closed-source and thus stunt community collaboration, making it difficult for developers to provide the functionality that their product users require.
Supabase provides an open-source mobile and web development platform, focusing on allowing developers to rapidly integrate their projects with Postgres databases, APIs, authentication and security protocols, and large-scale file storage systems. The platform is designed to facilitate such integrations in a unified manner, preventing the user from having to use additional software.
Whilst Supabase will face significant competition from well-respected development platforms such as Firebase, the company’s focus on open-source development shows great potential for it to access otherwise neglected audiences. Furthermore, by allowing developers to access APIs, databases, and other functionalities without navigating outside of the application, it presents opportunities for developers to rapidly increase efficiency and decrease the cost of their project workflows.
