To bring innovation to natural capital markets and support farmers to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions on their farms, rewarding those who demonstrate good land stewardship and protect the natural ecosystem in the long-term.
The regulatory push in the UK and EU towards climate neutrality is putting farmers under increased pressure to meet net-zero targets. One way of getting there is developing carbon removal credits through soil carbon sequestration - a process which also potentially offers farmers a long-term income stream, as they can subsequently develop and sell carbon removal credits on the growing carbon market. It can be complex, though, so Sward is a startup looking to support farmers through the process, and find buyers for the resulting CO2e certificates.
For now, details on the process are thin on the ground - as is data on participating farms. Generally speaking, Sward provides software and soil sampling support, and this is likely to prove crucial for overburdened farmers who may otherwise find the market difficult to access.
Major companies like BP, Microsoft, and Kellogg have committed to supporting carbon farming initiatives, and politicians have thrown their weight behind them too. Uptake, however, may depend heavily on whether it proves a sufficiently lucrative alternative to traditional crop farming. Certainly, whilst CO2e certificates and markets are in their exploratory phase, services like those offered by Sward will prove useful.
