Our take
On average, US students are with substitute teachers for 5% of the typical school year. That means students have substitute teachers for more than six months of their K-12 school career. The problem? The US is suffering from a national shortage of substitute teachers.
Swing Education is focused on tackling the substitute teacher shortage, with its online platform that connects schools and quality substitutes. With this, schools can access more substitutes, as well as offload the tedious work associated with managing them. Substitutes are in turn provided with a wider range of work opportunities - creating a model of mutual benefit where schools get the teachers they need whilst substitutes gain experience and can build their professional network.
Swing Education's early metrics were impressive, showcasing the high utility of its offering. In its first 5 years of operation it worked with over 1500 schools, filling over 150k teacher absence days. Now, it has surpassed the milestone of facilitating over a million hours of classroom teaching. With this success has come considerable funding, the latest of which will be invested in accelerating the growth of the company.
