Company mission

Sympatient's mission is to provide patients with the best care for their anxiety disorder.

Our take

Through a combination of an app and a VR headset, Sympatient hopes to provide innovative, CE-certified digital exposure therapy to help treat anxieties like agoraphobia, social phobia, and panic disorders, complemented by psychotherapy. The evidence that VR is as good, if not better, than real-life exposure is mounting, and Sympatient is hoping to be a leading European player once widespread adoption kicks in.

The problem, of course, is staying unique, and it’s not clear that the combination of VR headset, mobile phone, and headphones is something Sympatient can prevent other companies from jumping on board with. Already we’re seeing New Zealand-based oVRcome offering what seems an identical service, and as VR begins to see more widespread adoption by the healthcare sector there’s no doubt that more will follow suite.

Sympatient, however, already has a head start. Its digital treatment is reimbursed by all German medical insurance carriers, and the device is approved for medical use in all of Europe. If the team can, as they’ve suggested, consolidate their lead by broadening out their clinical partnerships, they could make real headway before competitors hit the market.
