Taboola is a digital advertising agency that pioneered thumbnail grid ads. Most web users have encountered Taboola ads at the bottom of Internet articles, which are presented under such categories as "Around the Web" and "Recommended For You". Backed by artificial intelligence, its platform is used by businesses to increase profit and user engagement, helping to increase engagement for digital properties and advertisers.
The ad agency had grown to a billion-dollar revenue generating business by 2018, having been founded in 2007. Despite significant competition in the ad-clicking niche from such rivals as Outbrain Amplify, ContentStudio and UpContent, Taboola has become a market leader.
By 2019, Taboola generated 450 billion recommendations on a monthly basis, having been adopted by major corporate partners, including The Weather Company. The firm has engaged in a raft of acquisitions, including the programmatic advertising company Perfect Market, and data-science led personalization technology company Gravity R&D.
The company has invested heavily in R&D and expanded into areas like eCommerce and TV advertising, fuelled by the goal of moving “beyond the browser.” It has also made a series of partnerships with big names such as Yahoo and TIME, and is investigating the applications of generative AI for ad creation.
