To stand any real chance of breaking into the social media and/or messaging spaces, startups have to do something different from the rest. The co-founding trio behind Tellonym, who were still students at the time, felt the need for a social app that promoted honesty, and they made it happen by ensuring anonymity.
Tellonym made quite an impression particularly with younger users, gaining millions of users in Germany and Europe at large. The app hasn’t been without its critics however, with media headlines drawing attention to how it could be abused for cyberbullying while protecting the identity of the offenders.
It should be noted that all social media come with these risks, and the team behind Tellonym have installed safety features to fight such behaviour, while they’ve also brought in stricter parental protection measures.
It remains to be seen whether these help, or indeed if they negatively impact Tellonym’s popularity. However, while the app has been unable to shake bullying concerns, the fact that the app is still holding its own as a niche social medium, having grown with only seed funding, is impressive.
