The Modern Milkman is one company which is dedicated to helping find a solution to this problem through its range of return and reuse groceries.
Starting off with attempting to eliminate single-use plastics in milk delivery, the Modern Milkman has since expanded to become a fully fledged online grocer. Since launch, the company has helped reduce hundreds of tonnes of single-use plastic waste. The company is taking a unique approach in the space, leveraging mobile technology to ‘return and reuse’ packaging which allows its users to combat food and plastic waste.
According to the Modern Milkman, recent funding secured will be put towards creating over 1,000 jobs in the UK and helping save 282 million plastic bottles from landfills by the end of 2024. However, competing with major online grocers will be difficult. The future of the company will likely depend on its ability to achieve the economies of scale that will allow it to compete on cost as well as service.
