Ultra-wideband technology is currently used within the latest iPhone and Android-powered smartphones, allowing users to locate their devices in the event that they're lost. Some companies have tackled the issue of locating other personal items such as wallets and car keys through chips that can be located through Bluetooth, but this is only useful if the item is located within a 10-meter radius.
Tile produces small tags, stickers and cards that contain chips that can be attached to personal belongings in order to be easily located if lost. Whilst the company previously used Bluetooth for local item location, it has now developed a new range of products that use ultra-wideband technology and augmented reality mobile applications to improve the relocation experience and increase the location range up to 200 meters.
The company faces strong pressure from Apple's AirTag. With a loyal following and seamless integration with its products, it's going to be a challenging period for Tile. In particular, Tile's products aren't able to be as precise as the AirTag as Apple has refused to give Tile access to the UWB chip in its phones.
