Twitter's mission is to give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly without barriers
Twitter is one of the world's largest social media networks, with over 300 million monthly active users. The platform allows users to share 140 or 280 character 'tweets', short messages which can contain text or media. Other users can then reply or 'retweet' to share the contents of a post.
Twitter has become a crucial communications tool for individuals, businesses, celebrities and more – with hundreds of millions of 'tweets' posted per day. The platform generates revenues through targeted advertising, which draws in excess of $2b per year. The company's new ownership plans to see this revenue increase in multiple fold by expanding its subscription service to more of its user base.
Like Facebook, Twitter's editorial and moderation policies have come under close scrutiny in recent years. In response to public pressure, Twitter has introduced 'hidden replies' and labels to content it considers 'disputed or misleading', as well as manipulated media. But in order to maintain its dominant position, the platform will need to double down its efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation and remain a trusted source of information.
