Our take

Unison is a San Francisco-based home investment company that allows customers to exchange cash for a share in the depreciation or appreciation of their home. With no monthly payments, no interest, and no extra debt, Unison aims to make it easier for homeowners to finance their life goals without the burden of debt.

Unlike traditional home equity loans, Unison offers customers a cash payment of up to 17.5% of the current market value of their home (up to $500,000) in the form of a co-investment. So far, the company has invested in tens of thousands of homes over 30 different states, having now invested in homes that, together, are valued at over $8.8B.

There are a number of competing co-investment companies based in California, and demand has increased tenfold since the start of the pandemic, but Unison continues to have the upper hand due to its long maximum term (30 years), high cash payouts, and quick and easy funding and eligibility process.
