Our take
Platforms like Wordpress, SquareSpace, and WIX have all popularised the use of low- or no-code solutions to website development. They’ve of course proven hugely popular, giving the growing number of entrepreneurs, SMBs, and content creators the option to cut out pricey web developers. Universe is taking this simple website development tool to an even simpler new level.
The platform allows users to create websites and commerce platforms using a no-code drag and drop grid - all exclusively via a smartphone. Mobile-first building is an interesting gamble that might pay off. After all, nearly 80% of users engage with the internet via their smartphone. This could spill over into web design too, if the trend continues.
Universe's simplicity, however, certainly restricts the kind of building that can take place. Universe is tackling this by planning to build out new features, and allow creators to develop and sell their own pieces like blocks and buttons. There’s also talk about applying the same principle to NFT development. This could well be the pivot (or the hype campaign) the company needs to break into the mainstream.
