Our take

Amid clusters of tech layoffs and a growing, increasingly remote engineering workforce, one company seeks to help tens of thousands of software development teams work smarter, not harder by gathering metadata based on Slack, Git, Jira and other apps — proxies for how many projects an engineer is working on and for how long they’re doing so.

The crucial rule of engineering productivity for Uplevel is that more hours does not mean more output. This has resulted in a unique product that combines operational metrics with people health considerations, optimising for deep work among its clients’ engineers.

The team has refined the product into a platform well-loved by engineers. Even a former customer has been hired as the CTO. Now capital is being deployed for growth with hiring focused on go-to-market teams, including customer success, sales and marketing.

While Uplevel’s customer numbers and reviews are only positive, its growth has come during the so-called ‘Great Resignation’ where a shift in power to employees has seen soaring wages for engineers. The real test for the startup will be whether clients consider Uplevel’s productivity boosting service a must-have in less costly HR environments.

Company values

  • PEOPLE FIRST | We humanize work for our employees and customers and work with others that do the same. > We communicate transparently – this means we care personally but challenge directly. > We design and create with empathy for the frontline developer. > We meet our customers’ needs while taking care of each other and ourselves. > What this is not: We don’t shy away from giving feedback, because want to be “nice”
  • PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION | We are solving a problem that’s never been solved. This calls for creative innovation. > We have bias for action. This means taking initiative and not waiting for direction. > We test and iterate. If we fail, we learn and try again. > Debate and commit — even if you ultimately don’t agree with the outcome. > What this is not: We always have a minimum quality threshold and are not okay with shipping a buggy product. We don’t stop getting feedback
