Our take

Founded by former employees at high-altitude balloon company Worldview, UrbanSky taps into this experience to create stratospheric sensor balloons that are both precise in their steering, and reusable.

Serving a range of customers in the environmental monitoring, insurance, oil and gas industries, UrbanSky's remote sensor technology creates datasets of the North American sky. It does this through near and long-wave infrared imagery, and one of its products has already proven useful in the real-time monitoring of wildfires through a partnership with NASA.

Mostly, UrbanSky has focused on customers in the Rocky Mountains, but has been building data for urban areas too. This will broaden its customer base, and it will interesting to see how the technology is utilised in cities. In 2026, the company was awarded $11.3 million through the Department of War’s APFIT program. This is significant step towards the tactical stratospheric systems that UrbanSky hopes to support.
