Our take

Vicarious Surgical is developing a minimally invasive surgical robot with powerful visualization, precision, and instrument control, designed to make it "as if the surgeon is transported into the patient’s body". Requiring only a 1.5 cm incision, through which the camera and two robotic instruments are inserted, Vicarious' system boasts unparalleled visibility and manoeuvrability alongside lowered risk to the patient.

Having received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for its innovative robot, the company began its journey to developing the next generation of surgical robots. There has been significant interest in Vicarious Surgical's proposition, but the company has been operating at a significant loss and in 2026 the board proposed dissolving the company. We will have to keep an eye to see how this develops, and update with news when it is available.
