Our take

Voggt is a new startup throwing its hat into the surprisingly lucrative, and growing, ring of collectible marketplaces. It’s distinctive edge? Its focus on integrating purchases with livestreamed auctions - a cross somewhere between eBay and Twitch.

With the rise of retail trading, and the lively investment community spurred on by the explosion of NFTs, there’s been a flurry of collectible marketplaces breaking onto the scene specialising in items like trading cards and sneakers. Livestreaming, however, remains relatively untapped territory.

Relatively, because livestream collectible auction startups like Whatnot are already in full swing. And, in an unfortunate stroke of timing, eBay announced the launch of its own livestreamed collectibles marketplace feature just as Voggt is in its early stages. This means drumming up an audience will prove tough. It’s unclear currently how Voggt will compete in terms of features - eBay, for example, has the resources to build in collectible authentication and the status to pull in well-known names in the trading card space.

Voggt is leaning heavily into more modern branding - and perhaps its singular focus will give it greater agility to adapt to the market than the marketplace giant. It will, however, need to move fast to carve itself out a sufficiently buzzy niche.
