Our take

Between 2016 and 2021, the size of the US population who regularly tune into podcasts has doubled, reaching an estimated 80 million people. Similar trends are observable elsewhere; for example, in the UK, over 15 million UK citizens are monthly podcast listeners. Naturally, the growth in podcasts' popularity has also caused a great increase in the value of the industry. Worldwide the podcast market was worth $9 billion in 2019, and some predict it to reach over $60 billion by 2027.

Aiming for the slice of the pie is Zencastr, a platform for creating podcasts online. In recent years, Zencastr's services have been used by just under 10% of an estimated 1.2 million active shows in the world, and since the shift to remote interactions, it has seen significant in its usage. Particularly unique to Zencastr is its ability to run only on a web browser, making highly accessible and therefore able to appeal to a very broad potential market.

Zencastr has seen a some increased competition in the category however, including the likes of SquadCast and Riverside.fm. Furthermore, as podcasting returns to in-person recording rather than browser-based recording, Zencastr could see some regression in the next few years if it's not innovative enough.
