Our take

The aviation industry is one of the largest in the world, estimated to be worth above $100 billion, and at its core are the aircraft that make air travel possible. Up until now, these aircraft have relied entirely on traditional fossil fuels, which are problematic for two key reasons. On the one hand, they are expensive, driving the cost of running planes - a cost borne by both businesses and consumers. On the other hand, these carbon-rich fuels are responsible for a considerable chunk of the world's greenhouse emissions - 2.5% in total - something the world quickly needs to reduce if it is to achieve environmental sustainability.

This is where ZeroAvia comes in. Its product - a renewably powered hydrogen-electric aircraft drive chain - aims to disrupt the market for powering air transport. ZeroAvia estimates that its first-of-its-kind powertrain has 75 percent lower fuel and maintenance costs, resulting in up to 50 percent total cost reduction per trip. It is no wonder, then, that the company has received considerable funding from the likes of Amazon, Shell, and Horizon Ventures.

That being said, ZeroAvia's solution to the fossil fuel problem in aviation is not the only one in consideration. For example, some research suggests that biofuels such as converted vegetable oils could cut carbon pollution from airplanes by upwards of 60 percent. Furthermore, considerable energy is also being put towards alternative approaches, such as technology that extracts emissions from the atmosphere, rather than preventing their release in the first place. A key challenge for ZeroAvia, then, will be ensuring that its tech stands out from the crowd, and proving this quickly will be paramount (the company hopes to provide its first commercial offering in 2024).
