To build tools to enhance communication freedom.
Berty is a messaging technology company that focuses on secure peer-to-peer communications. With its code available online at Github, the company’s open-source approach to encrypted messaging is in line with the ethos of Web3 companies looking to decentralise digital innovations in the sector.
Founded by former IT Security Architect and digital consultant Manfred Touron, Berty’s technology aims to tackle peer-to-peer chat technology that doesn’t require a middleman party to facilitate. It tackles the unreliability of cellular networks and the centralised world of chat services through three products - custom-built Interplanetary File Systems, a “Berty Protocol” and the Berty Messenger. The latter is built upon the protocol and is aimed at the non-tech customer and client.
As it stands, Berty has not assembled the pieces it has built. Bootstrapped and run by a small team of passionate engineers, the project will require expansion and investment to reach its goals. If its chat service grows its customer base, then Berty could be a leading solution that bypasses the need for companies like WhatsApp and Telegram. There’s a lot of work still to be done though, especially in Berty's marketing and publicity, but it will be fascinating to see how it progresses.
