MineHub is bringing the digitization of supply chains, that had been sweeping across sectors, to the as-yet-underserved metals and mining industry. The ultimate idea behind its offering is be a one-stop-shop for businesses in the field; delivering real-time visibility, automation of critical functions, revenue optimization, and many other capabilities.
With many businesses in the sector still relying on pen and paper for this side of their operations, there is definitely room for a shake-up. With MineHub, users can transform their complex commodity transactions into a real-time experience for customers and suppliers, with the ability to turn high value data that was previously hidden in manual processes into actionable intelligence, as well as streamline old, inefficient workflows.
MineHub's 2023 acquisition of Waybridge, another big name in the field, has cemented it as a leader in the space. This comes alongside additional financing that will be used to "capitalize on immediate opportunities", grow its revenue and shorten its timeline to profitability. In addition to this, the company secured a contract with a global mining company, and has launched predictive AI-powered shipment tracking to make its platform more precise.

When I joined Waybridge, I thought the supply chain, logistics, and commodities industry was all incredibly boring... but it turns out that it's one of the largest and most complex industries that holds the world together, with so many interesting sub-problems! The more I work here the more I realize that the industry is incredibly outdated, and we are building a much-needed product that people thought was too difficult to do. Customers are always blown away during demos and shocked that a product like ours even exists, and it's incredibly reaffirming to know that we are building something that customers actually want and need and appreciate.

When I joined, I was an early-mid level engineer wanting to gain more technical depth and exposure to different parts of engineering. Because there was a great mix of senior engineers to learn from and junior engineers to mentor, I was able to develop both my people/teaching skills while also collaborating and leading on increasingly complex projects spanning many parts of our engineering ecosystem. My manager (and leadership) also actually listened and paid attention to where I wanted to grow, and made a lot of effort to give me interesting projects that aligned with my interests that also had high impact on our company.

As someone with generally high compensation expectations, I know that I get paid at or above market value and feel valued for the work I do. Waybridge does a great job of being explicit about leveling so that it's very easy to see what's expected of you at each level and how to reach the next one. My manager is great at providing concrete feedback on how to level up (and also setting up opportunities for me to do so), and recognizing when it was time for me to be promoted without me even needing to ask for it. Leadership is also very accessible, so I have always felt comfortable talking with them (and my manager) about compensation and where I fall on the career ladder.

(Disclaimer - I joined as an early engineer and I'm now managing and hiring engineers, so I'm biased.) I think for a small team we're lucky to get to work with some really big companies - this is one of the advantages of Scott's experience and reputation in the industry. Our platform makes a big difference to how customers work, and I think everyone is contributing to features that are important both for them and for us as a business - so everything feels high-value. Internally I've had a lot of opportunity to work on team conventions and try to improve how we work - which I think is meaningful. On a company-mission level, supply chain issues have become a major news topic since the company was founded and it feels like we're helping to tackle a real problem.

Meaningful work
Nov 2021
For most of my time at Waybridge so far, everyone in Engineering has had the same title - Software Engineer. We're currently putting together some more cleanly-defined roles, but we're still small enough that ultimately there can't be that many "layers" and titles to the Engineering team. Personally I have had a promotion and title change when I took on management of a team... but my perspective is that the opportunities for me have come less from a clear progression of roles available and more from the freedom and need to do a lot of different kinds of work - to lead projects building new parts of the product, to work on our infrastructure, to help figure out how we manage engineering conventions, to meet with customers and figure out how to build data sharing features, to give input to hiring strategy - there's a wide range of things to do and to be responsible for. In terms of upskilling I've been offered training courses, books, resources etc. - but to be honest I haven't really used them.

I feel like this is true on a few levels. On the diversity level there's a good mix of ages, genders, races, nationalities, etc. and the founders were deliberate about building that into the team from early on. Generally I think everyone is sensible and thoughtful about considering differing views and backgrounds. Our professional and education backgrounds also differ a lot - commodities, finance, adtech, a mixture of established companies and startups, different kinds of universities and subjects. In Engineering we're deliberate about wanting to be able to support graduates, interns and self-taught engineers without requiring a huge list of existing skills and knowledge - we try to be practical and enable everyone to be productive. Personally I've worked with more women in Engineering at Waybridge than at all the engineering teams I worked in prior, and it feels like a much healthier team composition. That's not a super high bar... but it's still an improvement from what I've seen previously.

As a member of the leadership team, I know the effort that Waybridge makes to ensure team members are compensated according to fair market values, and that just because someone is quiet about compensation, their pay does not stagnate.

We are lucky to have very smart people working at Waybridge. Although, unsurprisingly, I do not agree with all the decisions made, I believe people I work with are at the top of their game, and are Intellectually honest.
