Role
Who you are
- Extensive experience as a Senior Software Engineer or in a similar role
- Deep understanding of modern software engineering principles with experience building highly observable, scalable, and distributed systems
- Advanced proficiency in React, including:
- State management using Context API and Redux
- Microfrontend architectures
- Component design patterns and performance optimisation
- Testing with Jest and React Testing Library
- Strong backend development experience with Node.js/Express, including:
- Microservices architecture
- Event‑driven systems
- Pub/Sub or Kafka
- API design and integration patterns
- Solid system design knowledge, including:
- Caching strategies (e.g., Redis)
- Scalability, reliability, and performance considerations
- Hands‑on experience with cloud‑native architecture and containerisation (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker)
- Strong understanding of Agile principles and practices (Scrum, Jira)
- Thorough knowledge of software testing methodologies and best practices
- Excellent problem‑solving and analytical thinking skills
- Strong collaboration, communication, and relationship‑building abilities
- Awareness of emerging trends and technologies such as Generative AI, Large Language Models, and Agentic Architecture / AI Agents
- Understanding of networking fundamentals across cloud and on‑premise environment
What the job involves
- Software Engineer will lead technical development and delivery at Team and sometimes Lab level
- They can be a Line Manager who will act as co-lead with the Team PO for overall delivery
- In these cases, they will be responsible for overall tech delivery, line management & app ownership alongside their own software engineering output
- Others will operate as Individual Contributors, who are specialists in particular technology areas and will be narrower and deeper in focus
- HOURS: Full-time - 35 hours per week

- Design, develop, test, and deploy high‑quality software solutions that meet business needs
- Work closely with colleagues across disciplines to capture requirements, analyse technical feasibility, and translate them into engineering solutions
- Lead the development and implementation of complex frontend and backend applications
- Maintain high standards of code quality, architecture, and documentation
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive, actionable feedback to peers
- Take ownership of debugging, root‑cause analysis, and resolution of production incidents
- Mentor and coach junior engineers, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, learning, and continuous improvement
