Role
Who you are
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or an equivalent engineering discipline
- 5+ years mechanical design experience
- Experience with a commercial CAD package (NX, CREO, Solidworks)
- Experience with GD&T
- Project ownership experience
- Manufacturing experience or experience interacting with vendors
- Experience with fluid system components (fittings, seals, valves, regulators, etc.) and system testing
- Experience with FEA tools to analyze structural margins

- The Stage Fluids and Components team is responsible for all fluid systems and components on the Terran R launch vehicle
- This includes systems for the liquid oxygen and liquid natural gas propellants as well as the supporting helium and nitrogen gasses
- We also design the individual valves that are used within these systems on the stages and engines
- This requires us to integrate our designs with those of the structures, propulsion, avionics hardware teams
- It also requires us to work closely with the GNC and performance teams to ensure that our systems can meet the requirements of launching and landing a reusable rocket
- Finally, we also work closely with the manufacturing and test teams to ensure our hardware is adequately built and tested
- In this role, you will be responsible for the mechanical and structural implementation of the stage fluid systems, ensuring a reliable and efficient operation of our Terran R launch vehicle
- Fluids routing and design trade studies
- Fluids hardware mounting structure design
- Fluid system hardware mechanical verification analysis including both hand calcs and FEA
- Structural design of mounting hardware for various fluid system component and routing
- Incorporate 3D printing methods and in fluid system mechanical design
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
- The right person for this role will need to be someone who enjoys leading the way for the team on exploring new methods and design approaches
- They will have end to end ownership of their designs and immediately see hardware you designed come to fruition
- They must be flexible to changes in strategic direction and willing to take full ownership of their projects to ensure we as a company are producing the best possible product while incorporating innovative production methods into their designs

Relativity Space has set out to build humanity’s multiplanetary future with its innovative 3D printed rockets. The company is at the forefront of software-defined manufacturing, combining 3D printing, AI, and autonomous robotics to create the “factory of the future.” By utilizing 3D printing, Relativity has simplified its supply chain, building rockets in less than 60 days that require 100x fewer parts.
The company has completed its flagship Terran 1 rocket and has begun its initial round of test flights. While the first launches technically failed, as the rocket failed to reach orbit, the attempt is still classified as a resounding success as the rocket managed the highest stress state inflicted on the rocket, Max-Q. The company is set to test the Terran 1 rocket again, before moving on to its Terran R rocket. While the company faces competition against SpaceX, Relativity Space’s cheaper and accelerated building process is well set to be a fierce competitor.
