Who you are
- A BA/BS degree or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years in product marketing, growth or lifecycle marketing, or similar go-to-market experience
- Previous background in SaaS marketing with experience in either consumer apps / technologies, early stage startups, or with exposure to small business audiences
- Experience working with product teams to define product strategy
- Customer empathy to shape product direction and execution based on their needs
- Strong quantitative analytical ability (Comfort with analytics to define, retrieve, and visualize data to run experiments and make product decisions)
- Comfort in a face-paced, startup style environment
- Genuine interest in and curiosity in helping small businesses succeed
What the job involves
- We are looking for a strategic, data-driven marketer to join the Square Staff team as a Product Marketing Manager, with global responsibility over the Team Management add-on products
- Our mission is to help sellers and their employees succeed together. The ultimate goal is to make sure we are building the right products for our audiences, and to promote growth and usage of the products within the portfolio
- We are a full-stack team, spanning across product, design, product marketing, engineering, operations and growth
- The Product Marketing Manager selected for this role will have a strong understanding of product strategy and SaaS business models, experience building product awareness and growth across the lifecycle, and experience with cross-functional coordination
- Reporting to the PMM Lead for Staff, you'll help build product and marketing strategies to help the team accomplish our goals
- Identify target customers, their needs, and how products will meet those needs through surveys, interviews, and product usage
- Understand our sellers; conduct surveys, interviews, and product usage analyses to learn who they are, what they need, how our products meet their needs, and what other alternatives exist in the market
- Partner and work with Product Management, Design and Engineering to determine the product strategy and feature roadmap
- Develop product positioning, value propositions, and important messaging to be used in product development and marketing campaigns
- Lead the go-to-market plan, ensuring that all customer-facing teams are on-message and maximizing each channel
- Develop and implement data-driven lifecycle marketing strategies to promote product growth and retention
- Track marketing program performance and improve through continuous testing
- Review competitive offerings and guide ongoing differentiation
Our take
Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.
The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.
Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
