Who you are
- Masters degree or PhD with relevant work experience in Computer Science and/or Human–Computer Interaction, Sociotechnical Systems, Statistics, Engineering or related fields
- Extensive programming skills in Python, Julia, Java, C++, or similar programming languages used in production machine learning and data science
- Proficient understanding of fundamental AI and ML evaluation techniques; e.g., optimization, regularization, as well as fairness concepts such as fairness-performance trade-offs and statistical metrics of fairness
- Practical research and/or data science experience with real-world data
Desirable
- PhD in Computer Science, Human–Computer Interaction, Informatics, Systems and Technology Studies (especially AI/ML) or related fields
- Research publications in prominent AI/ML venues such as conference or journals, especially in the area of responsible AI such as ACM FAccT; AAAI AI, Ethics and Society; ACM CHI, or similar
- Strong expertise in sociotechnical AI, equity and fairness, ethics, transparency, interpretability, safety, robustness, and/or privacy in the context of AI/ML
- Deep understanding of responsible AI topics such as evaluation formal verification techniques for machine learning models; statistical approaches to evaluation measures of fairness and their relationship with legal, philosophical and socio-technical concerns; differential privacy; robust machine learning; causal inference; moral ambiguity; strategic classification; and counterfactual analysis
- Practical experience with ML development pipelines and tooling. platforms such as PyTorch, Tensorflow, Keras, etc
- Comfort with rapid prototyping and disciplined software development processes
- Practical research experience and/or software engineering research experience in collaborative project settings
What the job involves
- In this role, you will lead research and the development of our AI products and services, ensuring they align with the company's values and ethical standards
- You will work closely with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and deliver processes to deliver high-quality AI products to our customers
- Lead end-to-end research to understand how AI systems can be designed with fairness equity, interpretability, privacy, security, safety, and robustness as first-class concerns alongside business performance
- Collaborate with applied researchers and applied engineering teams to drive multiple research projects
- Formulate problems, gather data, generate hypotheses, contribute to develop models and algorithm developments, conduct studies and experiments, synthesize results, and shape build prototype applications to deliver high-impact business applications
- Participate in top-tier academic conferences to broaden the impact of your contributions, both in human-centered technology and general AI, computational social science, STS, and Machine Learning / AI conferences, as well as specialized conferences on responsible AI, “fairness”, ethics, and/or eCommerce
- Collaborate with senior leaders to help define, build, and transform our businesses with a long-term goal of eliminating structural inequality and any potential systemic racism and other discrimination in our services
- Act as a subject matter expert and thought leader in responsible AI, internally for the company and presenting at industry conferences, and contributing to publications and thought leadership content
