Role
Who you are
- An interest in building performant, scalable, and reliable backend systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative mindset
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- Exposure to at least one backend programming language (Go, Python, Java, etc.) through coursework, internships, or personal projects
- Familiarity with SQL databases
- Foundational understanding of distributed systems concepts
- Familiarity with software development best practices, such as code reviews, testing, version control, and debugging
- Experience leveraging AI coding assistants and LLMs (e.g., Claude, Cursor, Gemini) to accelerate development — from prototyping and automated testing to code refactoring and documentation
Desirable
- Internship or co-op experience in a software engineering role
- Contributions to open source projects
- Experience with Go specifically
- Experience with Apache Airflow or related workflow orchestrators

- At Astronomer, we’re on a mission to make Apache Airflow the go-to standard for data orchestration, and our R&D team is at the heart of it
- We’re looking for a Software Engineer (Early Career / Recent Grad) join our Astro Core Services team, where you’ll work on core systems that power Astro’s Public API, authentication, billing, alerting frameworks, and ensure the platform is reliable, scalable, and maintainable
- This is a chance to build real-world production systems, collaborate with brilliant engineers, and directly impact how companies around the world manage their data
- You’ll grow your skills fast, tackle challenging technical problems, and be part of a team that’s shaping the future of data infrastructure
- Contribute to the development of Astro Platform's architecture and components, with guidance from senior engineers
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand user requirements, implement and iterate on features used by the engineering org as a whole
- Work with front end developers, product management and customers to deliver customer facing features such as public facing APIs and UI experiences
- Learn and apply best practices for building reliable, scalable platform software
- Contribute to the overall platform usability, reliability, and scalability
Our take
Developing data pipelines is essential for modern businesses to stay competitive, but building them can be a slow process. Workflow management tools for data engineering pipelines such as Apache Airflow makes the development process significantly simpler, but managing it manually is still a repetitive, convoluted, and time-consuming process.
Astronomer provides a data orchestration platform called Astro powered by Apache Airflow, aiming to automate its data pipeline management processes, unify data flows, and ultimately help businesses to access the software's full potential without DevOps. The company claims that its collaborative system helps teams to build data pipelines faster, increase data availability, ensure runtime environments are reliable within cloud infrastructures, and provide a holistic overview of business data.
Whilst it is undeniable that the company faces competition from other data orchestration platforms, Astronomer has been smart to recognize the presence of inefficiencies in Apache Airflow, despite its great potential.
