Who you are
- Junior ready for the next jump or mid-level backend experience: You have experience building scalable backend systems
- Tech Stack: You have worked in Kotlin (Micronaut) and PHP (Laravel), or have experience in one with the ability to quickly master the other in a mixed environment
- Clear & pragmatic communicator who builds alignment fast
- Authentic team player with empathy, openness, and ownership
- Comfortable with AI-powered tools to accelerate your work (Claude, Gemini, Codex, etc.), with the willingness to learn more
- If the mission excites you but your experience isn’t a perfect 1:1 match, apply anyway - we care about potential, not perfection
- You’ll be expected to work with AI-powered tools. Some we use:
- GitHub Copilot / Claude Code
- ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude
- Notion AI (docs, knowledge, meeting notes)
- AI-enhanced testing & monitoring (e.g., generative QA, Grafana ML)
- We don’t expect mastery of al, but we expect comfort learning, experimenting, and adopting AI responsibly
- To succeed in this position, your spoken and written English skills need to be proficient. Since Monta is a globally active company, you’ll be communicating often and regularly with our co-workers and partners around the world, making your professional English knowledge essential
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a PHP/Kotlin Backend Engineer who’s ready to roll up their sleeves, take ownership, and build with us
- Own the full lifecycle: Scope out requirements and plan new features in collaboration with the team, taking code from ideation to production
- Cross-team execution: Work closely with Roaming Ops, Product, Frontend and other Backend teams to navigate ambiguity and ensure features integrate seamlessly
- Ensure quality at speed: Perform automated validation and verification testing while supporting your teammates with thoughtful code reviews
- Monitor and Maintain: Utilize tools like Grafana and Loki to monitor system health, ensuring reliability for the drivers who depend on us
- Own outcomes in a high-trust environment where we value execution over perfection
- Navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities keeping momentum when it matters most
- Celebrate wins and learn fast from misses alongside an ambitious, diverse team
- Push boundaries with courage and resilience while staying true to our DNA
- A brief overview of our tech stack:
- PHP/Laravel monolith
- Kotlin services with Micronaut and Exposed
- Dart/Flutter (incl. Flutter Web) for apps
- Typescript/React (+Next.js) for web apps and rapid prototyping
- Observability via Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenSearch/Kibana
- AWS + Kubernetes with Helm and Argo CD for deployments

Our take
Monta is an EV charging company that is building ways to make it easier to charge EVs from wherever you are. In order to do so, the company is working to digitise the EV charging ecosystem via a charging management platform.
Transforming mobility is a leading global effort towards a greener society and European cities are rapidly seeing the uptake of electric vehicles. In spite of this, there is a dearth of EV charging points, and Monta is trying to rectify this issue through its unique all-in-one EV charging platform, which makes charging vehicles simple and seamless, thereby increasing the adoption of a more sustainable method of transport.
Monta has invested its efforts toward opening up new markets, specifically North America, whilst consolidating its market position in Scandinavia, the UK, and Germany, as well as creating transparency within the electricity market and continuing to fund digitising the power grid infrastructure. Alongside this, the company recently partnered with Octopus Fleet to support the expansion of its fleet and energy services. This partnership strengthens Monta's role in large-scale fleet electrification and puts the company in a strong position as demand for reliable EV charging continues to grow.
