Role
Who you are
- Minimum of 7+ years of automotive, robotics, aerospace or related industry experience
- 2+ years of industry experience mentoring or managing a team of software engineers
- Undergrad or Masters in Computer Science, Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineering and/or related technical fields
- Demonstrated technical leadership experience
- Strong technical experience with C and C++; Rust experience is nice to have
- Experience working with low-level microprocessor and microcontroller systems with real-time operating systems
- Experience working on safety-critical software projects following the relevant industry safety standard
- Understanding of time synchronization and network fundamentals
Desirable
- Experience with automotive interfaces (CAN, Automotive ethernet), low-level interfaces (SPI, UART), and high-speed mixed signal interfaces (PCIe)
- Experience with vehicle actuation or sensors such as GNSS IMU or Radar
- Open-minded and collaborative team player with the willingness to help others
- Passionate about self-driving technologies, solving hard problems, and creating innovative solutions
What the job involves
- Our Embedded Software team owns the firmware for the microcontrollers we use for safe vehicle actuation, power delivery, sensor cleaning and more
- This role will partner closely with the Compute, Hardware, Systems and Safety and Onboard Software teams to build, test and maintain the low-level software that drives our trucks
- Define and set technical vision and direction for the team, including planning and executing against milestones, allocating resources and owning aspects of the embedded systems
- Be the technical lead on projects; contributing as an IC while also manage a team of engineers
- Be part of a team of multidisciplinary Engineers and Research Scientists using an AI-first approach to enable safe self-driving at scale
- Implement low-level software for truck control functions such as engine control, steering and braking
- Integrate sensors and vehicle actuation feedback with our localization and control systems in order to implement redundant safety features
- Develop software according to industry-best practices for safe, reliable and robust code
- Collaborate with our hardware, safety and systems teams on design, build and validation of highly reliable systems
- Collaborate with other software and autonomy engineers on implementing low-level functions from high-level systems
Our take
Autonomous vehicle technology is rapidly developing and many sectors are recognising its value. However, whilst the self-driving industry has made significant advancements there is much more that can be done. There are challenges in this space surrounding scale and developing commercially viable self-driving technology.
Waabi hopes to tackle these challenges and be the leader in self-driving technology with their "AI first approach". The company said that combined with a closed-loop simulator, this approach will allow both common driving scenarios and safety-critical edge cases to be tested at scale - solving one of the key issues in the industry.
Waabi successfully raised one of the largest Series A rounds ever raised in Canada, and has gone on to raise fresh Volvo and Uber-led funding in early 2024. While the company's focus is currently on autonomous long-haul trucking (launching its first generation of trucks in November 2022), the company is well set to lead the next generation of self-driving technology.
