Who you are
- Experience spearheading a UK PLC remuneration committee and collaborating with executive teams
- Proven ability to design and implement reward strategies linked to business goals, including wellbeing and recognition programmes
- Strong leadership experience in managing teams and driving strategic change management initiatives
- Significant expertise in the design and implementation of global compensation, incentives, and benefits programs
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with diverse groups
- Highly analytical, with strong numeracy and problem-solving skills to resolve complex issues and improve processes
What the job involves
- As the Group Reward Director you will design a reward strategy with appropriate stakeholder input and implement compensation and benefit programs that will support the execution of JM’s strategy, and enable leaders to attract, retain and motivate employees
- Define and implement Johnson Matthey’s reward strategy to attract, motivate, and retain employees, ensuring alignment with business strategy, culture, DI&B initiatives, and employee value proposition
- Act as a trusted reward partner for the Global Leadership Team (GLT), including the CEO and CFO, as well as senior HR peers across the company
- Guide the Remuneration Committee agenda, including paper preparation, presentations, and managing the triennial review of remuneration, engaging with the Board, GLT, and investors to align on policy changes
- Manage the reward centre of excellence, covering compensation, benefits, wellbeing, recognition, and global mobility, while developing a succession plan for critical roles within the team
- Collaborate with Global Business Services (GBS) to ensure seamless delivery of reward activities and manage the reward budget to ensure effective ROI
- Ensure global compliance with reward structures, policies, and reporting requirements, while providing expert support for senior talent hiring and M&A-related reward matters

Founded in 1817, UK-based Johnson Matthey has built on over 200 years of experience in chemistry and materials to become a world leader in sustainable technologies. It was responsible for scientific milestones such as producing the first emission control catalyst, greatly reducing vehicle exhaust emissions. From relatively humble beginnings it has since grown into a global business, present in more than 30 countries.
Perhaps a victim of its own success, Johnson Matthey has struggled in recent years with issues related to over-expansion including an unprofitable battery materials division and inefficient management. By reducing its administrative headcount, slimming down to its core business and focusing on emerging green technologies, Johnson Matthey hopes to reduce costs and allow it to compete more effectively against major rivals such as Croda and Ceres.
So far this strategy has paid dividends, with Johnson Matthey returning to the FTSE 100 in late 2022. With its core business booming, it is aiming to focus on research into sustainable catalysts and renewable fuel cell technology which will enable it to increase the 90% of its products that are contributing to a greener economy to 100% by 2040.
