Role
Who you are
- We’re looking for a high-powered generalist with strong verbal and analytical reasoning skills to own and run our commercial operations
- This role is well-suited to someone who is comfortable moving between big-picture thinking and detailed execution, and who enjoys turning ambiguous problems into working systems that reduce friction and help the business grow
- You come from either a generalist business background (e.g. consulting, operations) or a legal background and are excited to expand beyond a purely legal role into commercial and operational decision-making
- You are a structured, analytical thinker with strong verbal reasoning skills, comfortable working with complex written materials and ambiguous problems
- You are comfortable working with numbers and have the ability and interest to learn financial concepts
- You can reason through business processes end-to-end and have the aptitude to improve or automate them over time
- You collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and external experts (e.g. lawyers, customers)
- You are organized, able to manage multiple projects in parallel, and reliably drive work to completion
- You have demonstrated sound judgment, ownership, and a bias for action in fast-paced environments
- You bring a low-ego attitude — no job is too small or too large
- Strong academic background with evidence of analytical rigor
- Nice-to-have: MBA
What the job involves
- Metabase’s BizOps & Finance team is a small, high-leverage group that builds the systems keeping the company running smoothly behind the scenes
- We cover a wide range of areas — finance and accounting, sales operations, legal operations, compliance, and account management — but we treat them all as flavors of operations. Whatever the task, we take a systems-driven approach — design it, build it, and run it (ideally, automatically). Our goal is to free the rest of the company to focus on building great software
- In this role, you’ll be responsible for the systems and processes that underpin how we contract with customers and manage commercial risk, helping us close deals efficiently and serve a broader range of customers
- You’ll manage contracting, partner closely with internal teams and external counsel to make business decisions on risk, and lead key compliance initiatives, translating complex requirements into practical, scalable processes
- Partner with external counsel and our Sales team to identify and mitigate business risks during contract reviews
- Maintain and update contract templates, terms of service, privacy policies, and related documents
- Improve and maintain systems that support our commercial operations (e.g. routing contract reviews, implementing and building-out our contract management system)
- Drive compliance-enhancement projects to reduce risk and expand our ability to serve regulated and enterprise customers
- Note that this is not a people-management role

Metabase is leading a new trend in Business Intelligence tools. Before it, there were big enterprise systems like SAP, and then self-service tools like Tableau and Looker. Now, open-source tools like Metabase are taking the stage, available both as a self-hosting solution and a managed cloud offering.
Metabase's open source nature has helped it build a large and active global community. The company generates revenue through professional services such as managed hosting, support, and assistance with implementing Metabase in custom analytics or business intelligence setups.
It also serves over 85,000 companies worldwide. And now, the challenge for the startup will be capturing significant revenue while continuing to stay true to its open-source principles.
