Who you are
- Minimum of 8 + years experience in sales or business development (this can include at least 3 years of post-graduate biology, chemistry, or biotechnology scientific experience-e.g. PhD or a combination of Master’s education and technical work experience)
- At least 2 years of relevant experience in a role requiring complex deal making or management consulting strongly preferred. Please include a deal sheet with your application if available
- Astute “nose” for sensing emerging concerns held by partners/customers/clients for new business opportunities
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to partner effectively with the executive team and cross-functional leaders throughout the company, and communicate thoughtfully to diverse stakeholders
- Demonstrated networks of contacts at enzyme companies
- Bias towards action to execute on new business opportunities swiftly
- Enthusiast about pitching, negotiating, and closing new business opportunities
- Excellent synthesis of complex information, comfort with ambiguity, hypothesis-driven problem solving
- Comfort with toggling between strategic thinking and execution
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and mobilize people across the organization, and to learn quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Prior experience within a fast-growth company or entrepreneurial environment is a plus

What the job involves
- As a Director of Business Development for Enzyme Services, you will be responsible for growing Ginkgo’s Enzyme Services Business
- You will scout new areas where Ginkgo’s platform is ripe to be a disruptive technology, introduce that expertise to prospective partners, and scale Ginkgo’s business
- Given your ability to synthesize information and lead with novel hypotheses, you will quickly distill information from prospective customer conversations and secondary sources and advance this thinking into specific deal concepts that meet partner needs and utilize Ginkgo’s Foundry to its fullest potential
- As deals progress, you will shepherd them closely, but also keep an eye on the big picture and ensure that your priorities are focused on the best fit and highest likelihood opportunities
- Central to your success in this role will be the ability to develop your own thesis on a given market or partner need, and drive new deals and partnerships
- Key enablers of success include synthesizing information quickly, taking action in spite of ambiguity, and using hypothesis-driven problem solving to quickly advance your point of view
- Complementing these analytical skills, your success will require an astute ability to pinpoint partner needs, talent to establish and build new relationships, and a track record of selling products or services to such partners. You will also need an understanding of biology/biotechnology to grasp technical aspects of sales and excellence in communicating clearly both internally and externally. You will be BD/sales targets-driven and motivated to look down the road at what is required to meet your goals
- Build theses on the specific enzyme R&D needs of potential customers/partners
- Lead sales efforts and take ownership of meeting and exceeding sales targets
- Work jointly with Ginkgo’s marketing, product development, and alliance management teams to tailor solutions that meet customer needs
- Actively seek out and establish new relationships with prospective partners
- Conceive of and advance specific technical and commercial deal concepts with prospective partners
- Execute on and contribute to strategy for function, leveraging customer insights and an understanding of business priorities
- Build robust deal pipeline, including monitoring deal progress, proactively defining and mitigating issues, and negotiating strategic partnerships
- Ultimately, be successful in executing and then closing on multiple deals in parallel
- Stay informed about industry trends, market dynamics, and competitor activities. Use market insights and customer insights to adapt strategies and identify new opportunities
- Travel as necessary
Our take
Research into the programmable nature of biological cells presents massive opportunities for almost every industry, but the technology is hardly accessible. Bespoke programming of cells requires cutting-edge lab equipment and an in-depth understanding of microbiology, something that would not seem feasible to the average product designer.
Ginkgo Bioworks sells programmable cell development services to provide access to the technology to industries outside of medicine. Whilst the company has already worked on medical products such as vaccines for Moderna, it will research and design products based on programmed cells for any product that it believes holds value.
The startup’s approach to providing cell programming services outside of the medical sector is smart, as an increasingly high number of industries recognize the potential for bespoke cell-based materials. Ginkgo also provides an opportunity for innovation where it previously was not possible, by taking the research and design into its own hands, where companies would usually need to facilitate such services within their own company.
