Who you are
- 4+ years experience as a data scientist or data analyst in which you have independently extracted meaning from big data sets with little engineering support
- Mastery of SQL and proficiency in R/Python. Passionate to try new approaches to advance your technical skills. Bonus points for experience with Spark and Looker, Tableau, or other data visualization software
- Deep understanding of experimentation theory and practice
- Specialize in sophisticated analyses and regularly use statistical methods in your work
- Distill highly complex problems into narratives that are concise, actionable, and memorable, and express your recommendations with both conviction and finesse
- Guided product teams to identify high-impact opportunities, set meaningful goals against key outcomes, and driven decisions
- Passionate about reproducible work and have picked up tools to this end
- Acted as a mentor, guiding others to make their own work better and more efficient
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our Product Analytics in Brooklyn, New York! This person will partner with the Core Buyer group, whose focus is supporting teams working to improve our buyer experience
- You will play a meaningful role in deciding how we can best engage and grow Etsy users through analysis of behavioral and transactional data

- Design and analyze rigorous experiments, help teams set great hypotheses, and deliver robust analysis of experiment results
- Transform raw data into meaningful and impactful analysis characterized by strong data governance, technique transparency, and clear documentation
- Raise the skill level of the entire analytics team through the creation of outstanding work, mentorship, and the introduction of better practices, processes, and tools

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
