Role
Who you are
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience in applied data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a related field, with a record of leading high-impact ML research initiatives
- Expert proficiency in Python or other programming languages with extensive hands-on experience using machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Sci-kit Learn
- Demonstrated expertise in Large Language Models (LLMs), natural language processing (NLP), computer vision (CV), multimodal model or network analytics, with a history of developing innovative solutions and pushing the boundaries in these domains
- A passion for translating cutting-edge research into scalable, high-performance applications across multiple fields, ensuring robustness, efficiency, and real-world impact
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to work closely with machine learning engineers and software engineers, to implement research into a production environment
- Able to drive research strategy, influence technical direction and work closely with engineers, product teams, and leadership to align research with organisational goals
- Proven ability to manage complex research projects, prioritise effectively, and deliver results within tight timelines, with a focus on high-impact outcomes and alignment with organisational goals
- Please note, ExTrac provides services to a number of different government clients, some of which specify nationality criteria for individuals seeking Security Clearance (SC). Given this, we can only consider applications from individuals who hold a passport from the UK, another NATO member states, Australia or New Zealand
What the job involves
- Drive the strategic direction of research within the machine learning team, leading the development of novel algorithms, architectures, and models for the ExTrac platform. Leading research on topics ranging from continuous pre-training or fine-tuning of LLMs, architecting agentic systems, and optimising inference models for efficient, production-ready deployments
- Lead high-impact research across multiple ML domains, including LLMs, NLP, computer vision, multimodal systems, and network analytics
- Stay at the forefront of advancements in AI, applying state-of-the-art methodologies to solve some of the most challenging real-world problems. Continuously push the capabilities of the team and the organisation by integrating the latest research
- Write and review high-quality, scalable code, while guiding collaborations between software engineers and ML engineers to ensure seamless integration of research into high-performance, deployable solutions
- Oversee large-scale research projects, working with the CTO to define research directions and managing resources, to deliver impactful results and ensuring alignment with long-term business strategy
