Who you are
- PhD in physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field
- Strong research experience in quantum algorithms, ideally including work on optimization or closely related algorithmic problems
- Demonstrated expertise through high-quality scientific publications
- Experience mentoring researchers or contributing to collaborative research projects
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong research track record demonstrated through publications in leading scientific venues
- Deep understanding of quantum computing and quantum algorithm design
- Expertise in optimization, algorithm design, or related areas relevant to quantum algorithms
- Familiarity with classical optimization techniques and benchmarking methodologies
- Familiarity with quantum error correction or fault-tolerant quantum computing
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
What the job involves
- We are seeking an outstanding researcher to lead and advance Quantinuum’s work on quantum algorithms, with a particular focus on optimization problems
- This role combines scientific leadership with hands-on research aimed at developing algorithms that can unlock the capabilities of future generations of Quantinuum’s trapped-ion quantum computers
- The successful candidate will build and lead a new research team within Quantinuum focused on quantum optimization and related algorithmic challenges
- In this role, you will drive research into novel quantum algorithms relevant to optimization and related computational problems, evaluating their performance against state-of-the-art classical approaches
- The role requires deep expertise in quantum algorithms and strong familiarity with optimization and algorithmic methods more broadly
- This is a player–coach role, combining individual technical contributions with leadership of a growing research team
- You will help define Quantinuum’s long-term strategy for algorithms and applications in optimization and guide the co-design of algorithms and hardware to unlock the capabilities of emerging quantum systems
- You will collaborate closely with leading researchers across the full quantum computing stack—from hardware, quantum error correction, and software to the broader quantum algorithms and applications teams
- You and your team will also work with academic and industry partners to explore compelling use cases and evaluate the practical potential of quantum algorithms for optimization
- Publishing high-impact scientific work in leading journals and presenting results at major international conferences is a core component of this role
- Build and lead a new research team at Quantinuum focused on quantum algorithms and optimization
- Define the team’s scientific direction and drive the development of novel quantum algorithms, including benchmarking against state-of-the-art classical methods
- Contribute directly to research and algorithm development, working closely with teams across the quantum computing stack
- Mentor and develop team members, set clear goals aligned with team objectives and Quantinuum’s broader scientific and strategic priorities, and support hiring and team growth
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external academic and industry partners to identify promising application areas and develop practical use cases
- This role offers the opportunity to build a new research team and contribute to shaping the direction of quantum optimization research at Quantinuum. You will work closely with researchers across the quantum computing stack and help develop algorithms for future generations of quantum hardware
Our take
The processing power of quantum computing (QC) promises to yield substantial advances across dozens of diverse industries, from the development of pharmaceuticals, to the chemical industry and financial services. Billions are being poured into the steady development of these computers, both into the hardware and the specialised software which can harness these devices.
Quantinuum was formed from the merger of Cambridge Quantum and Honeywell, QC software and hardware firms, respectively. These two highly respected companies had independently made quite a stir in the QC space and attracted substantial investment. Their merger has created the world's largest integrated QC company, able to build and operate quantum computers at both the hardware and software levels.
The organisation has moved fast and has already developed software and hardware for the application of QC in chemistry, natural language processing, machine learning, algorithms, and cybersecurity. All of these are exceedingly lucrative and high-stakes areas of business, and it is leaders in precisely these sectors (Google, for example, and IBM) who are investing so heavily in the QC project.
Quantinuum's software is system agnostic, allowing the advances it makes to be used on other quantum computers as well as its own, opening up major business opportunities. So Quantinuum is working in conjunction with some of the sector’s major players, whilst also pursuing high-value customers and lucrative market opportunities. It’s remarkable work, and impressively funded to match. It will continue substantially impacting the progress of key industries going forward.
