Who you are
- The ideal candidate has a strong technical background in cloud systems, familiarity with the Apache Kafka ecosystem, and a proven track record of delivering successful developer and operator-focused products
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a software product manager, ideally for a developer product
- Empathy for our enterprise customers, and a passion for solving their problems with the software
- Ability to craft a product strategy and roadmap in concert with customers, engineering, design, and go-to-market teams
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to distill technical concepts to a non-technical audience
- Strong technical competency, especially with distributed data systems, public and private clouds, and stream processing
- Experience with data sharing technologies is a plus
- Experience engaging with an open-source community is a plus
- Bachelor's, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related technical field
What the job involves
- As a Senior Product Manager in the Cloud Kafka team at Confluent, you’ll contribute to the mission of building the world’s best event streaming platform
- We are seeking an experienced and strategic Product Manager to lead the vision, strategy, and execution for our Kafka Operator experience
- This role is critical to simplifying the deployment, management, and scaling of Confluent Cloud Kafka environments for our enterprise customers
- Key responsibilities include defining and owning the product strategy and vision for the Cloud Kafka Operator, conducting market research and competitive analysis, translating strategic objectives into comprehensive product and user experience requirements
- You’ll be responsible for the success of major product initiatives, from initial conception and customer development to growth strategy
- You’ll become the trusted resource for your product, making sure that the engineering, design, sales, and marketing have what they need to make the right trade-offs, build the right product, and grow it successfully in the market
Our take
Confluent is a commercial company built on top of the open-source Apache Kafka project. Confluent and Kafka have developed a streaming data technology that processes massive amounts of information in real-time. The streaming database technology was developed at LinkedIn as a way of moving massive amounts of messages. The company decided to open-source that tech in 2011, and Confluent launched as the commercial arm in 2014.
While the base open-source component remains available for free download, it doesn’t include the additional tooling the company has built to make it easier for enterprises to use Kafka. Confluent's value add is in those additional tools, including a cloud version of the product and a marketplace for sharing extensions to the platform.
Confluent expanded strategic partnerships with Microsoft and acquired Immerok, and in 2023 expanded its cloud platform. 2024 saw further product expansions with the launch of the Confluent Migration Accelerator, all exemplifying how the company is living up to its name by rocket-boosting the benefits of Apache Kafka integration for companies.
Now, it looks like IBM is eyeing the company for acquisition and Confluent looks to be a natural fit. Long positioned as the real-time backbone behind modern application, Confluent would gain global scale and an even deeper enterprise reach under iBM, while cementing its role at the center of AI-driven architectures. For COnfluent, the deal would marka shift from fast-growing independent disruptor to foundational infrastructure player powering the next wave of enterprise AI.
