Our take
Walgreens is the second largest pharmacy store chain in the USA and handles prescriptions, health and wellness products, health information, and photo services. Dating back to 1901, the company thrived during the prohibition era by selling “prescription” whiskey and, by the time of the Great Depression it survived through its operating 600 stores across 30 states.
Walgreens saw a substantial boost in growth in the 2010s when it merged with Swiss company Alliance Boots to form the 'Walgreens Boots Alliance' holding company. Though Walgreens became a subsidiary of Alliance Boots, it still retained its brand and Chicago headquarters.
One notable market shift for the store is its partnership with big pharma companies to facilitate clinical trials for new products from within its stores, a trend that came out of the COVID-19 pandemic. These partnerships hope to contribute towards better representation in clinical trials, with companies being able to reach Walgreens’s diverse customer base via the collaboration.
