Role
Who you are
- BA/BS in Computer Science, a related degree, or equivalent practical experience
- You have hands-on, production-level experience across significant parts of our technology stack:
- Frontend: ReactJS, Next.js
- Backend: Java, Kotlin, SpringBoot, RabbitMQ, MySQL, MongoDB
- You have experience and enthusiasm for testing, test-driven development, and building reliable systems
- You are proficient with and excited to leverage AI tools in day-to-day development tasks such as code generation, debugging, and documentation
- You have a strong command of best practices, design patterns, and system architecture tradeoffs
- You can hit the ground running and quickly familiarize yourself with an existing codebase and toolset
- You have experience with distributed system performance analysis and optimisation
- You can understand, diagnose, and articulate technical challenges and solutions effectively
- You have a high level of comfort navigating ambiguity and making the tradeoffs without compromising quality
- You're a collaborative partner who thrives in a cross-functional environment, working closely with product, design, and engineers across various tech stacks to build cohesive, high-impact solutions
- You are proficient in deploying a diverse stack of LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude) and AI-native IDEs (Cursor, Windsurf, Copilot) to automate and elevate professional workstreams
- You have expertise in prompt engineering, focusing on high-density context provision to minimise hallucinations and maximise model accuracy
- You are skilled in defining AI behaviour through structured system prompts and custom agent configurations for predictable, high-quality output
- You have a deep understanding of the AI ecosystem, including Model Context Protocol (MCP), API connectors, and the design of autonomous agentic loops
- You can proactively identify high-impact areas for AI integration to drive measurable gains in operational efficiency and output volume

- As a Software Engineer at Rent the Runway, you will work with an enthusiastic team of engineers focused on the customer journey across multiple devices and surfaces
- You’ll build world-class experiences for an eager and passionate customer base, from their first visit to their first order!
- Our team works in an agile environment, building high-quality, performant software while solving high-impact and complex problems!
- Participate in all aspects of agile software development, including design, implementation, and deployment
- You will utilize AI tools for code generation, debugging, documentation, etc
- You’ll build intuitive and well-tested APIs for manipulating & retrieving data
- You will optimize for performance and scalability
- Drive technical projects to success in a fast-paced startup environment
- Deepen your knowledge and build your skills across our technology stack: ReactJS, Next.js, React-testing-library, Java/Kotlin, MySQL, Mongo, RabbitMQ, Spring Boot, Splunk, Splunk Cloud, SignalFX
- You’ll deprecate and remove functionality & services that no longer suit our needs
- Contribute technically to projects by being a hands-on coder and removing roadblocks
- Assist in prioritisation efforts, planning future roadmaps, and provide mentorship to others
Our take
Rent the Runway seeks to profit from two important trends in apparel consumption: wanting to stay on top of the latest fashion trends while living and purchasing sustainably. By providing a platform for women to rent designer pieces, its users can have it all.
The company allows users to rent, subscribe, or buy designer apparel and accessories. It achieves this with its network of partnerships with hundreds of top designers and managing the crucial but complicated logistics in-house. It offers its partnered brands sophisticated analytics about potential customers in return for lower prices on designer garments.
Rent the Runway is now focused on diversifying revenue streams while reducing its costs. Its recent partnership with Amazon is an example of this new direction: while it will use this channel to sell clothes previously rented through its platform, it will, for the first time, be selling new clothes based on rental items modified in line with market data.
While moves such as this may well shift Rent the Runway towards profitability, it also risks undercutting the company's central message of sustainability and supporting the circular economy. The company believes that by creating better quality clothing, it will nonetheless be aiding in the fight against fast fashion. Time will tell if this move helps or hinders the sustainability movement, but it is likely to boost Rent the Runway's bottom line regardless.
