Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a proven track record of building and scaling web applications in a production environment
- Deep expertise in modern full-stack technologies—ideally TypeScript, React, and Node.js—along with a strong grasp of functional and object-oriented programming
- Proficiency in leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot) to accelerate delivery velocity, automate boilerplate, and enhance code quality
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement complex, distributed systems that are scalable, maintainable, and secure
- Proven experience leading high-priority technical projects from conception to delivery, including the ability to navigate trade-offs and align stakeholders
- A passion for fostering a high-performing engineering culture through code reviews, technical documentation, and mentoring junior engineers
Desirable

- Hands-on experience developing or integrating LLM-based features or agentic workflows into production applications

- Experience transitioning from monolithic architectures to microservices or event-driven systems
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join Rula’s Patient Matching team
- This team is focused on driving meaningful impact across the patient funnel
- Our goal isn’t to help patients find any provider, but to help them find the right provider: someone they trust, feel comfortable with, and want to continue care with
- In practice, that means building and evolving the systems behind provider search, ranking, availability, eligibility, and booking experiences
- As a Senior Engineer, you’ll play a central role in shaping this direction by bringing order to ambiguity, designing durable systems, and delivering software that directly impacts how patients experience care
- We’re looking for product-minded engineers who see problems, move quickly, and help the team build the right solution quickly
Our take
More than half of adults in the US will be diagnosed with a mental illness during their lifetime, and yet inaccessibility of treatment remains a huge problem. That’s what Rula aims to solve, with its platform that matches users to therapists that are covered by their insurance.
The company, formerly known as Path, is partnered with a number of major health insurers, including UnitedHealthcare and Anthem, making it an accessible service for millions of Americans. It allows users to browse therapists almost instantly, with just a short questionnaire to fill in before their matches are shown.
Though the market for tech services offering mental health provision is an overstuffed one, with giants like BetterHelp as well as newer competitors, Rula's partnerships with insurers set it apart. The business has been steadily growing, and significantly bolstered its executive team in 2023. Its recent rebrand was designed to emphasise its vision to improve not only access to mental health care, but also clinical outcomes.
