Role
Who you are
- BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of software development experience with proficiency in Go, Java, or Python
- Experience building and operating large-scale cloud services in AWS (preferred) or GCP
- Strong understanding of cloud-native applications and microservice architecture
- Proven ability to influence technical decision-making and execution
Desirable
- 4+ years full-time work experience on an infrastructure platform team providing managed services or Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to sizeable (200+ engineers) engineering organizations
- Led design, development, best practices, observability, tuning, scalability, elasticity, and performance/cost optimization of core infrastructure components
- Has a deep understanding of one or more of these domains:
- Kubernetes/Compute Infrastructure
- Cloud Networking
- HAProxy, Istio, Envoy
- DNS, BGP, TGW, VPC Peering, ALB, VPN
- Edge/CDN networking (Cloudflare, CloudFront, Fastly)
- Observability
- Monitoring, Alerting, and Visualization: Prometheus, Grafana
- Distributed Tracing: OpenTelemetry, Jaeger, Zipkin
- Log Aggregation: Loki, Fluentd, Logstash, Graylog
- Cloud Resource Management / Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible
- CICD automation using GitLab CI, CircleCI, or GitHub Actions
What the job involves
- The Foundational Infrastructure team provides cloud-native infrastructure, automation, and tools that empower Compass teams to build and deploy products securely, efficiently, and with minimal operational overhead
- As a Senior Engineer, you will influence key technology decisions that impact the wider engineering organization
- You are a pragmatic technologist who designs and delivers scalable, resilient systems while fostering collaboration and technical excellence
- Beyond execution, you serve as a mentor, guiding a talented team of engineers while driving impactful, high-complexity projects
- You lead by example—innovating, teaching, and shaping the future of Compass Engineering
- Guide technical strategy and mentor engineers on high-impact projects
- Design, develop, and optimize scalable infrastructure solutions
- Maintain and improve platform reliability, scalability, and security
- Manage and monitor Kubernetes clusters, storage, and networking components
- Provide support for infrastructure-related incidents and internal customer needs
- Partner with customer teams to proactively identify infrastructure needs
- Document and refine infrastructure design and operational practices

Compass uses an AI-driven platform to smooth out and speed up the process of buying, selling, or renting property. It functions much like a traditional broker, but employs tech to reduce the time, uncertainty, cost and friction of transactions for buyers, sellers & agents.
It's disrupting a sector so far largely averse to tech innovation, allowing users to close deals in less time than the industry average of 30-45 days. Compass is now the largest independent real estate brokerage in the USA, with over 29,000 agents nationwide.
Despite being a leading residential brokerage and competing well, Compass has remained unprofitable. While the company is replanning its cost structure to be profitable over the next year, it announced its third round of payoffs in early January 2023. Its profit-generating plans include expanding into mortgages, escrow & title services.
