What the job involves

  • Lyft’s engineering team is growing rapidly, and we are looking for engineering managers to help us scale
  • Our engineers are smart, flexible, and love solving difficult challenges
  • They look to their managers for organizational transparency, career development, mentorship, and honest feedback
  • They move fast and ship code to production continuously, relying on their leadership to increase productivity by removing obstacles and keeping processes lean
  • Our engineering managers are people with varying technical backgrounds and interests -- some are involved in the technical details of their team and others provide general technical direction and oversight
  • As managers, our job is to keep teams efficient and executing on the right goals
  • We build teams that are inclusive, helpful, and have a strong sense of ownership for the things they build
  • Lyft’s Infrastructure teams are responsible for building the foundational systems that engineers rely on in order to build stable, scalable, and efficient services
  • We build standardized infrastructure that helps software developers move fast, while still providing them with the flexibility they need to innovate within their teams
  • We are looking for experienced leaders to guide these teams as they create an exceptional development experience for all of Lyft
  • These are high leverage roles, as your work will have a multiplicative effect across Engineering, and contribute directly to Lyft’s overall stability
  • Lead the infrastructure team responsible for shaping the future of Networking at Lyft by defining and driving the technical and team vision and strategy
  • This team is responsible for developing and maintaining our service mesh, edge routing, and traffic management capabilities, leveraging Envoy and AWS technologies to ensure scalable, reliable, and efficient service communication
  • Collaborate with other platform teams, particularly Compute and Storage within Foundational Infrastructure, which manage Lyft's Kubernetes platform and data storage infrastructure
  • Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of your team members
  • Help develop their careers, and assign them to projects tailored to their skill levels, personalities, work styles, and professional goals
  • Build teams that are collaborative, inclusive, and respectful of each other
  • Provide continuous feedback, address underperformance, and recognize the individual strengths and contributions of your team members
  • Create plans for prioritizing technical and resourcing challenges in your organization
  • Maintain a balance between building sustainable, high-impact projects and shipping things quickly
  • Instill a spirit of continuous improvement in the team’s code, architecture, and processes
  • Work closely with the Lyft recruiting team to hire high potential candidates from diverse backgrounds
  • Work with your engineers and product managers to maintain a prioritized backlog and create short term and long term goals
  • Own your team’s deliverables and ensure we continue to ship scalable, highly-available products that delight our passengers and drivers

Our take

Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.

Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.

In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
