- PhD in Economics, Statistics, Marketing, or a related field, or a Masters Degree in a similar field with 2+ years of experience
- Deep knowledge of causal inference methodologies and experimentation techniques
- Proficiency in statistical programming (Python or R), database usage (SQL), and agentic coding
- Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to stakeholders at varying technical levels
- Proven track record of solving business problems through data science methods
Desirable
- PhD in Economics, Statistics, Marketing, or a related field
- Passion for marketing and consumer science, with a desire to stay informed about the latest academic research
- Familiarity with Bayesian modeling and its applications in marketing
- Experience with causal ML modeling
- Experience in developing end-to-end models for data-driven decision-making
What the job involves
- MarTech Data Science Measurement empowers Airbnb to optimize marketing ROI through data-informed decision-making. We lead the way in defining and advancing best practices for measuring and optimizing marketing impact
- We collaborate with Marketing, Finance, Engineering, and Product to provide actionable recommendations and tools based on effective, timely, and granular measurements
- We are seeking experienced Data Scientists to serve as technical anchors across our team’s two pillars
- Causal Inference: Apply and develop causal inference methods to estimate the effectiveness of Airbnb’s marketing initiatives
- Data Analysis: Conduct data pulls, analyze trends, and create new features to support measurement efforts
- Experimentation: Design and analyze experiments to evaluate the impact of marketing campaigns
- Collaboration: Work effectively with cross-functional teams, providing insights that optimize marketing strategies
- Thought Leadership: Lead the creation of internal white papers and contribute to Airbnb tech blog posts
Our take
When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.
Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.
Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
