- Familiarity with current design and prototyping tools (Figma, etc)

- Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for tackling difficult challenges

What the job involves
- As a Mobile Engineer on the UI & Architecture team, you will create and maintain foundational systems that all Lyft mobile engineers rely on, enabling teams across Lyft to deliver rich experiences that connect people and places. You will build scalable infrastructure, helping developers move fast and innovate, while ensuring Lyft's mobile developer experience remains at the forefront.
- Your work will have a multiplicative effect across Engineering and contribute directly to Lyft's overall stability.Our apps are used by millions of people, and we take great pride in our work, which means adhering to excellent development practices, careful code architecture, and an organization built around rapid releases.
- Our codebase is written entirely in Swift, utilizing modern design patterns and coding standards. We rely on third-party libraries and actively contribute back to the community, including the Swift language itself
- Develop and maintain reliable mobile infrastructure, including networking, architecture, and UI frameworks (Lyft Product Language and DeclarativeUI library), to enable Lyft iOS engineers to deliver high-quality mobile experiences
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners (designers, Android engineers, Web engineers, and other Mobile Infrastructure teams) to strategically define the future of mobile UI and architecture, ensuring an innovative mobile developer experience at Lyft
- Support iOS engineers from across the organization as they use the tools we build and leverage these interactions to improve our roadmaps and offerings
- Bring new ideas to the table that aim to ease developer friction and keep our codebase joyful to develop in while continuously improving the codebase through refactoring
- Stay current with iOS development and contribute to open-source projects like the Mobile Native Foundation and Hammer
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
